We take an alternative approach to traditional factory siting, layout, and operation. Emboldened by shifts toward digital manufacturing, mass-customization, and production localization, and enabled by continued advancements in ubiquitous internet connectivity, high-capability-low-cost-robotics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer vision, stronger and lighter materials, higher power densities and greater efficiencies, and lower cost of computing, we normalize the physical and digital form factors of factory equipment, fixtures, and structures, creating a matrix of interoperating pieces that work together inherently and intelligently.

This modular manfacturing approach aims to eliminate the legacy physical and digital architectures that are built on inherently wasteful infrastructures that cling to decades-old paradigms.

Entire factories worth of machinery can be built and tested offsite, then deployed and commissioned extremely quickly with fewer surprises. Building, deploying, and managing a factory can collapse down to a single line item.

MODICA builds smart, scalable, modular manufacturing systems inside of smart, scalable, modular workspaces and structures (which we also build).

Our process begins when we help property owners, real estate developers, and industrial tenants envision, plan, financially model, and prepare sites to accept our custom modular office, production, and other function modules. We specialize in (and are particularly fond of) the adaptive re-use of former industrial and commercial structures but we can work with anything from bare plots on the side of a mountain, to brand-new high-rises.

Based on extensive research of thousands of CNC machines, 3D printers, Digital/Desktop process tools, and traditional machinery, we developed a simple metric to help both the end-users and the original manufacturers of these implements better see, understand, and act on capacity and capability information.

We call this family of metrics the MODICA Machine-Tool Volumetric Performance Ratios, or mtVPRs. The mtVPR™ is a measure of the various physical and functional specifications of a piece of equipment, relating finished part size, beginning material/stock/billet size, machine part capacity, interior operating envelope, exterior

Our proprietary algorithm takes these measurements along with a range of other parameters as inputs, and uses them to determine a unique score for the particular make, model, and process.

Higher isn’t necessarily better, but neither is lower - the meaning of the resulting mtVPR™ is context and use-case dependent, but can be immensely helpful in understanding space utilization and efficiency.
